Hulu to go mobile, may reach Android and iPad

Hulu alludes to going beyond desktop

Hulu chief Jason Kilar at a conference this week said his company will make a push into mobile that could include key platforms. Asked about supporting an Apple tablet before the iPad launch, Kilar made it clear that the TV streaming service will "embrace any device" and won't lock itself into supporting any one platform. He adds to GigaOM that Hulu expects mobile to be complimentary to the desktop rather than detrimental.

The comments strongly imply an approach that targets all major platforms, including Android and iPhone OS, is coming in the future. Hulu has so far been limited to the web, in part due to its business model: as it depends on Flash-based video with interstitial ads, the company would need to re-engineer content for media players and smartphones that often don't support Flash or have only a limited implementation.

For Hulu, the easiest platform would be the upcoming Flash 10 for smartphones, which could give Android, Symbian, webOS and Windows Mobile with relatively few changes. With no known plans for native Flash, the iPad and iPhone would need direct access to the video files (as with YouTube) and custom code to insert ads.

    still flash

hulu delivering to ipad won't affect flash in any great measure. if hulu is smart they've been encoding their videos as h.264 which flash player plays no problem. it's actually a really simple solution h.264 using the html5 tag for chrome, ipad, iphone and safari; flash plugin playing the exact samge h.264 source for firefox, ie and opera. one video different playback engines.

We can only hope that flash goes away sooner rathe

Flash is a resource hog that needs to go away. There are far better open source solutions for delivering simple video. If we want to speed up the internet and maximize mobile data use, this pig needs to go.

    I'd pay for that.

I'd pay oh, $20 for a Hulu app where I didn't have to watch the darn adds, and could stream over 3G. With adds I'd want it free. Still, this is one of the things that would work very well, and is missing from the iPhone atm. With Netflix stating that they had no plans to offer streaming to mobile devices, this is a great move for Hulu.

    Flash is not going anywhere

Why would Adobe give in when it's making a lot of money from Flash? Flash developers love it and will never give it up. Apple and Linux users make up a tiny portion of the internet. It appears the only users that don't like Flash are Apple product users. The Apple mobile platform is the only one that doesn't support Flash.

Sure, I wish Flash would go away, but Apple doesn't have enough leverage to remove it.

The only reason there's such a need for Flash right now is because there's not much other choice. However, more and more competition and choices are making an appearance, such as Silverlight (not a good example, but an example), HTML5, and others. Eventually flash will lose its grip and all this bitching about the Apple products not having flash can stop. People forget that Flash is a memory hog and has all kinds of security flaws. I bet you a s*** load of money, if flash does come to the iProducts and causes all kinds of instability and security issues, people will blame it on the iProduct and not flash. This is how stupid a majority of consumers are and this is probably a reason why Apple will not allow flash yet or ever. My saying goes "Happiness will only come to the uneducated consumer when the product is free and can do everything including make french toast and beacon."
