Microsoft event list confirms Windows Phone 7

New Win Mobile to get renamed, due at MWC


Microsoft has inadvertently removed the last doubts about its Mobile World Congress plans by posting an event listing. A day of presentations at Energize IT in Ottawa, Canada on March 30th makes specific reference to "Windows Phone 7" along with the company's usual fare. The slip confirms both a rebadge of Windows Mobile as well as that the OS update should be revealed at MWC in mid-February.

The particular naming scheme lends credence to rumors that mentioned the name change. These so far have included Zune user interface elements that may extend past just the media player as well as the integration of Mediaroom IPTV, Silverlight and Xbox Live. Windows Phone 7 devices are all expected to be high-end media devices with 1GHz or faster processors and wide VGA touchscreens that would help Microsoft's software compete against expected iPhone updates.     Will this key command be available when a Win 7 phone lockes up? what about viruses? Can viruses be sent phone to phone? hmmm guess we will just have to wait. I see Norton and Mcafee licking their chops... more $$$$$$

    If Microsoft had released a Windoze phone about 2 years ago, it might have had a chance. But now there's Android as well as Apple, and they're hitting the market from two different directions.

    Android is there to keep Microsoft down with the relentless pressure of "free". Microsoft can't give away free software licenses since selling software is their business. Google can give away free Android licenses since selling online and mobile ads is their business. Do the math.

    Apple is leading the way to the future of computing, just as it always has. Both Microsoft and Google are just following along, waiting to copy Apple's innovation. They can certainly make money trying, but Apple has an enormous lead. Everyone thinks it's a 2 or 3 year lead, since iPhone was first released in 2007.

    Actually it's more like a 10 year lead. iPod is enormously successful not because it's a shinier, easier to use media player. Its success comes from its integration with iTunes, which has taken 7 years to get where it is now.

    iPhone is also enormously successful, again not just because of its ease of use. iTunes and the App Store are major factors. So you could argue that since iPod's original release in 2001, Apple has been relentlessly developing its hardware (easy), software (hard), integration and ecosystem (very hard), and user experience (extremely hard).

    So good luck to anyone trying to play catch-up. And I didn't even mention Apple's economy of scale. They've virtually cornered the flash RAM market. They buy so much flash RAM that they can get very low per-unit pricing. Purchasing that much volume also puts the squeeze on anyone else trying to buy flash RAM, forcing everyone else's per-unit pricing up.

    All of which improves Apple's hardware margins and hurts all of their competitors' hardware margins. And guess what. Despite all the great software Apple makes, and despite the fact that iTunes is outselling all traditional music stores, the vast majority of Apple's profits come from their hardware.

    Microsoft feels compelled to enter the smartphone market with something. Anything. You might recall that they tried that in the media player market with a little "something, anything" called Zune. And you'll also notice that their phone software doesn't contain the word "Zune" in it.

    No, the best thing that has happened to Microsoft in about 8 years is Windows 7. So they're trying to erase the vast whiteboard of failure that was Windows Mobile (called Pocket PC before that, and called WIndows CE even before that) and attach the "7" to the new name for it. To try to get some of that "7 halo effect".

    Why pay for a Windows Phone license

    when a company can get Android for free? Microsoft is going to have to start from scratch all over again. Android, WebOS, Symbian, Linux(Maemo), BlackBerry OS, Apple iOS, are all standing in its way. Windows Phone 7 is really going to need to offer an awful lot in order to get the companies that just dumped WinMo to get back on board.

    honestly, I know so many people, even so-callled technophiles - in denial about Apple's contribution to computing, that they will happily guzzle up news like this and then sit and wait for years whilst the MS product manages to not catch up to what Apple offers.

    And this is not a new thing, the story was as true in 1990 as it is today,

    so please, don't feel sorry for them...

    As opposed to the iPhone's "Hold the button down until it turns off"?

    And, btw, ctrl-alt-del has not worked on Windows in years. Like with a Mac, if it locks up, won't come back from sleep, etc, you need to just turn the damn thing off. Ctrl-alt-delete now basically just brings up the login screen (if it is set to do so) and the options for locking the screen, logging out, task manager, etc.
