More town hall: next iPhone is an A+ update, beats Android

Jobs says iPhone will beat Android

More details have emerged from the post-iPad Apple town hall meeting hosted by Steve Jobs. In addition to setting up Android as a main rival, Jobs promised "aggressive updates" to the iPhone that would beat Android. He also teased that the next iPhone would be an "A+" update.

On Macs, the MacRumors tipster says Jobs expects the 2010 lineup to "take Apple to the next level" but that Blu-ray isn't likely to play a significant part. The software to support the HD movie disc format is a "mess," he said, and Apple is only likely to start adding Blu-ray drives when there's true mass market adoption. Those that want to support Blu-ray have to support advanced copy protection systems like AACS that require more effort to implement than DVD's CSS encryption.

The Apple co-founder also indirectly confirmed some rumors by noting that the Lala acquisition was for the iTunes team and stressed that the iPad is on the level of the iPhone and Mac in terms of significant product launches.

I was surprised...

That the Jan event didn't do two important things: all iPhone to 3GS, and all Touch get cameras. I suppose that would have stolen iPad thunder, but it would have been a great buildup to "one more thing..."

Until BluRay players cost what DVD players have, and discs come down in price, it is a non-started with many people. By that time discs may be obsolete as far as Apple is concerned.

For a long time now, blu-ray has been cheaper than dvd when apple adopted dvd-r.
Bd-players/burners are being sold more than macs, so there's already that "true mass market adoption".
Newest excuse seems to be bd's "software". Last time it was licencing, what next?

When apple released their fist mac with dvd-r and fcp, that was a breakthrough for indie videomakers.
Now it seems that year 2010 will still be "Year of SD" when this magical iPad has sd-resolution and 60 year old type of video signal output.

And they are calling adobe lazy. What has apple done for FCS or HD indie small scale video distribution in last 4 years? Allmost nothing. And how long adobe has been offering bd-authoring software bundled with its editing suite?

What is the needed price point? Stand-alone bd-players are less than $100 and burners are less than $200. Do you really remember what dvd-players cost a decade ago?

BluRay running out of time

01/31, 05:17pm reply

My hunch about BluRay is that while it delivers HD video, it is being introduced just as physical media are dying out. It has a relatively short window of time in which to become mainstreamed and less expensive, and it very likely won't make it before being replaced with a disc-free alternative.

By that time, my kids will be largely out of the house and I can actually watch a few movies now and then...

Blu-Ray DVDs

01/31, 06:57pm reply

I like Blu-Ray. The discs give us full 1080p HD. Renting them from Netflix is the way to go. Takes a few days to get the disc but what's the hurry? We have a Blu-Ray player hooked up to our main TV and that is OK. Don't need them on my laptop. It would take too long to dowload full 1080p movies over WiFi and I certainly don't want anything less than 1080p.

Since when?

01/31, 09:13pm (1 reply) reply

Since when are blue ray players under 100 dollars? Lowest i see is 129.

Also, a lot of people still have standard definition sets, or sets that only do 720p or 1080i. What is the point in getting a blue ray player when your tv can't take full advantage of the signal?

Steve Jobs...

... is afraid of Google's Android and the Googlephone(s).

You don't hear comments from the Google team about "beating the iPhone". They just quietly do their jobs and push the boundaries of re-defining what a smartphone is with cutting edge features added daily. It's clowns like the media that place labels like "this Google phone is an iPhone killer".

For Steve Jobs to promise updates that would "Beat Android" really means he is truly afraid of Android and it's potential.

He at least recognises the real competition, better than saying he doesn't see them as a threat like other manufacturers do with Apple products. Google entering the Phone and computer business is a problem for future cooperation between these company's, to be on the safe side Apple needs to replicate Google technology's in case they leave the platform.
