ExoPC Slate gets Flash support, 32GB SSD


The ExoPC Slate tablet PC is slated to go head-to-head with Apple's recently announced 9.7-inch iPad. The 8.9-inch device has Flash support and runs on Windows 7, however, for a more complete web browsing capability. There is a 1.6GHz Intel Atom CPU along with 2GB of RAM, while storage comes from a 32GB solid state drive and SD memory cards.

Intel's integrated GMA950 graphics processor handles the video processing on the 1024x600 resolution screen. Wi-Fi is built-in, along with a Bluetooth and Ethernet connection. A 1.3-megapixel camera captures photos and videos, and there are three USB ports, a VGA output and a SIM card slot for connecting to 3G data networks. The battery is rated at four hours. A virtual keyboard, app support and e-book compatibility round out the known features of the device.

When the ExoPC Slate launches sometime in March, its $599 price tag will match that of the 32GB iPad. [via Engadget]

    Windows 7?

    From my perspective, Windows 7 is NOT a finger-friendly operating system. That's why the original round of tablet computers failed (oh, and, of course, because of their too-high price). I think it'll be iPhone OS and Android that will rule in this type of device. Leave Windows and its klunky interface to the notebooks with keyboard and mouse.

    Amusing

    Funny how they think they are copying the iPad, but still completely miss the point.
    The good thing about this tablet is that it allows its users to install any kind of malware, obsolete drivers, bug nests or CPU hogs, then try to connect all sorts of incompatible hardware, then pull their hair out trying to clean up the registry when their tablet crashes, locks up, steals their passwords and loses their data. All the while making fun of Apple 'fanboys' who allow Evil Steve to control what goes into their system.
    Then, they will accuse Mac users of being smug.

    I hope ExitPC makes a hundred tons of these ... because they're going to be stuck with 192300 pounds of them.

    What Apple has figured out is that this new category of device has to be FAR BETTER at what it does than a smartphone or a laptop in order to justify its existence. Trying to make a tablet a full-fledged computer is known to be a FAIL - the industry's already been there, flopped with that. A device that provides a most incredible web-browsing experience - an order of magnitude better than any desktop or laptop (and certainly better than any smartphone, iPhone included) will succeed. Is that the iPad? It remains to be seen. But I bet the iPad will at least come closer than any so far.

    USB and Ethernet ports

    WHY do you need USB and ethernet ports in a device like this? No, the point of a tablet is WIRELESS. The iPad has a simple dock connector. That's it. No slew of ports cluttering up the thing and confusing the masses. If you want it connected, dock it.

    And 4 hours of battery runtime? Woo hoo. Yeah, I'll get tons done between charges.

    Once again, Apple 'gets it' and makes a device that really will push the boundaries. The others will make copycats that people will buy, but end up being disappointed with when it's not what they expect.
