Microsoft intros 250GB HDD for Xbox in Japan

Microsoft will soon launch a 250GB hard drive for its Xbox 360 gaming console in Japan. This is the first time such a large drive is being offered as an add-on for the gaming console, letting owners up the capacity of their Xbox 360s beyond 120GB. The only other way to get the console with such a large capacity previously was by buying a 250GB Elite model introduced late in the fall.

Owners can also upgrade their existing 20GB, 60GB or 120GB consoles, all of which were also available as accessories. They can also add it to an Xbox 360 Arcade or Core unit. The drive endows the Xbox 360 with the same capacity as the largest available PlayStation 3 from Sony, which doesn't need to sell upgrade kits as most standard 2.5-inch SATA notebook drives will work.

The 250GB hard drive will cost the equivalent of $172 when it launches in Japan on March 11th. There is no indication whether or when the drive will be offered on its own in other markets. [via Impress]
