China's Android variant may run Win Mo apps

China Mobile on Tuesday made the unusual claim that its variant on Android will run Windows Mobile apps. In upgrading Open Mobile System to 2.0, the carrier said it inherited voice recognition and many of the other features of Android 2.0 but also that it will recognize the "Windows Mobile API." It's not certain which apps for the Microsoft OS, if any, will work in OMS' current form.

The company has long broadcast its intentions to make OMS run non-Android software, including Symbian, but in the several months since its release OMS has only run Android apps on devices like the Lenovo Ophone O1. Emulation or transcoding of apps for another phone OS has generally been very rare if not entirely absent on smartphones, as the strain on the processor is often too high. Also, little advance work has been done to allow for non-native code. [via MobileTechWorld]
