Amazon restores Macmillan books

Amazon fulfills promise after price war

Amazon today confirmed that it has put back Macmillan's titles on both the Kindle store and in its regular store. The move follows after Amazon agreed to raise prices on e-books last weekend as the result of a three-day standoff. Amazon had unsuccessfully tried to withdraw books as a negotiating tactic to keep prices at $10.

Macmillan is "delighted to be back in business," company chief John Sargent told the New York Times.

Amazon declined to say what had led it to concede to Macmillan, but it's widely believed the company faced the likely threat that Macmillan would simply rely on sales through Apple's upcoming iBookstore, where prices should be more favorable. Opportunities to reverse the price hike have also faded as both HarperCollins and Hachette have called for identical price increases in recent days.

    All hail Apple!

They've been able to restore higher prices to the publishing industry.
