Google expected to show Twitter-style Gmail

Google tonight confirmed talk of a significant product update by sending an invitation to a special event on Tuesday at the company's Mountain View, California campus. The company is short on details but promises "some new product innovations" at the gathering.

The most commonly expected launch is for a Facebook- or Twitter-style status update system for Gmail that would provide a real-time feed of information from contacts. Other possible candidates center on other web-based advancements; hardware isn't expected to make an appearance, although the company may use the opportunity to formally roll out Android 2.1 for Droid or other mobile services.
