Seagate intros 10K RPM, 600GB enterprise drives
Seagate said on Tuesday it is now shipping its Savvio 10K.4 enterprise-grade hard drives. The series is the first to feature a model with 600GB of capacity and a 10,000RPM speed in a 2.5-inch form factor. The drives are said to offer twice the capacity of their competitors and are the first to carry a 2 million hour Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF).
The drives have either a 6Gbps SAS interface, with dual-port communication, or a rare direct 4Gbps Fiber Channel connection. Cache is relatively small at 16MB. Compared to the commonly used 3.5-inch hard drives used for enterprise applications, the Savvio 10K.4 use less power, with a 4.6W average idle current draw.
Data is protected by a Protection Information option that can detect corruption of data in flight between the host system and the drive. There is also a TCG-compliant, Self-Encrypting Drive (SED) security option on the SAS models that takes away the need to overwrite or destroy drives when returning them for warranty reasons or after a lease expires.
Seagate has not revealed pricing or ship dates for the Savvio 10K.4 hard drives.

2 million hours?
There's less than 9,000 hours in a year.
That's means over 200 years… What are they really trying to say?
