MS employee hints Win 8 will be major change

Microsoft plans to make its next version of Windows a major overhaul, an employee claimed in an MSDN blog that has been pulled but remains cached online. What most people refer to as Windows 8 will be something "completely different from what folks usually expect of Windows" and will have a broad consensus from the company. The company is depending on collaboration from "dozens and dozens of teams" to generate the final product.

A small hint in an interview with Microsoft's Consumer and Online Regional VP John Mangelaars also suggests Windows 8 will be "mind-blowing" compared to Windows 7, which Mangelaars believes compares well to Mac OS X Snow Leopard.

Very little is known about what Windows 8 will entail other than its alleged July 2011 target date, though the advance of technology points to 64-bit code and multi-touch playing an even larger role than they do today. [via Microsoft Kitchen]

It may not suck if it copies 10.3.n completely

Try that one on for size.

I thought Windows 7 was going to be the great departure from Vista et al. Just when exactly is this departure going to happen? Microsoft, the train of thought that never leaves the station.

    Let me guess

Instead of copying OS X, Windows 8 will copy the iPad.

    Windows 8

Knowing Microsoft Windows 8 will be a mash up of Mac OS X, iPhone/Touch OS and iPad OS. Throw in the old DOS in there and there you go. Windows 8.

    This nonsense again?

MS promises the world and delivers sea-monkeys. (sounds exotic, but is actually a known quantity - no offense, GCA)

Apple applies a number to their OS and then intros things that really do innovate.

Yes Windows 8 will be different. Why? Here are some possible reasons:

    1. MS will ask Apple to develop it for them
    2. MS will call it Doors instead of Windows
    3. MS will use COBOL as the development language
    4. MS will use 8088 and 4KB of memory as the base machine with 320KB floppy drives.
    5. MS will make Steve Ballmer tape his mouth shut before releasing it
    6. MS will advertise it in AARP magazine only
    7. MS will make it a closed system - only software written in Basic 0.001 will run
    8. MS will give 2 coupons to iTunes store if they promise to connect their iPod to Windows 8
    9. The packaging will be eaten by Steve Ballmer on TV
    10. Only MS employees will get a discount to purchase it.

    That about covers it.
