Kateeva promises OLED TVs cheaper than LCDs

Relative newcomer to the flat panel TV market, Kateeva is promising to introduce technology that will eventually make OLED HDTVs less expensive than their LCD counterparts. A new printing technology the company is developing will eventually produce OLED TVs that cost 60 percent of what a comparably sized LCD panels costs, according to company executives. A prototype printer and related process being tested now can produce displays over an area of nearly 71 by 59 inches, which could theoretically produce displays as big as 90 inches.

Kateeva will test its technology in 2011. OLED panels offer improvements in image quality, flexibility, efficiency and weight compared to existing LCD TVs, although the technology to produce them is much more expensive. A prime example is Sony's XEL-1 OLED TV, which is sized at 11 inches and carries a $2,500 price tag. Most significantly, Kateeva now believes it could reduce the cost of producing such panels.
