iPad drives huge upswing in iPhone app development

Android grows slower than iPhone OS due to iPad

The launch of the iPad has been a catalyst for an unprecedented surge of iPhone app development compared to Android, analysts at Flurry found today. Following the anticipation of the iPad and its immediate wake, iPhone app development nearly tripled from less than 600 new apps in December to over 1,600 in January. Many likely view the iPad launch as a potential land rush where an early app will get more sales.

Google's platform saw its own large uptick in development and saw development jump by about 33 percent to 300 new apps, helped in part by the launch of phones like the Nexus One. However, the sheer growth in interest for Apple devices spurred on by the iPad has potentially eliminated any near-term hope for Android of closing in on iPhone for the sheer number of new apps. It also shows "a positive early indicator" for iPad sales as customers are drawn to the apps on offer.

"The recent spike in Apple iPad support has swung the pendulum back in Apple's favor to a level not seen at Flurry in six months," the researchers said.

Actual usage habits are however fairly similar, according to the study. Android phone owners start up an app a slightly higher number of times each month and play games for longer, but iPhone apps are used slightly longer on average.

    But Gates said

Bill G said that the iPad is nothing to really get excited about. It has nothing that impresses him. Nothing to take notice and say we need that for Windows. So this chart must be b.s. then.

    Correlation vs. Causation

Easy on the causation argument, kids. There could be other factors at play.

    Upswing?

There are about 150,000 iPhone apps. We needed an upswing?!?!? What we really need is a better way of sifting through them. Frankly I would love it if where possible, instead of getting screen shots, you could try a 30 second demo on your Mac.

Bill Gates has spoken. The iPad has nothing...

we'd want our Windows tablets to have... such as 140,000 apps, 10,000 developers, books, magazines, newspapers, TV and movie distribution rights, etc. Better to have a full version of Windows 7 and a stylus. Yeah, sure, Bill.

I won't be certain how well the iPad will do until the first one ships and consumers start saying they like it or not. However, I'm certain it will sell in far better numbers than any past Windows tablet did despite the fact that it might not multitask or display Flash or doesn't come with a stylus.

    re: Bill Gates & iPad

Personally I wanted something more along the lines of a Mac OS X SL netbook, the iPad really doesn't excite me that much. Having said that Bill 'Windows market-share is eroding" Gates is clueless and envious and I value his opinion, not at all. The iPad will do well for many, I am sure.

    Of course!

This only makes sense. A bigger device and a bigger screen means bigger and better farting apps! Developers need to get moving, and now!

    Projections?

"I won't be certain how well the iPad will do until the first one ships and consumers start saying they like it or not."

You might want to look at the countries where preorders of the iPad were allowed. Several of them had to stop accepting new orders after a few days because their projected supply was already sold out.

There are 175,368+ Apps on iTunes!

As of February 14, 2010, there are over 175,368 apps on the iTunes App Store.

This is freaking AMAZING! It is a number that is growing so fast, it overwhelms every other platform. Realize that not every developer is using Flurry's code. Thus Flurry is actually underestimating the number, acceleration, and growth of apps for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.

The iPad brings in a whole new universe of possibilities that do not exist on any other platform. It brings in another gold rush.

    Booyah!
