Pre Plus and Pixi Plus to fuel Palm surge

Palm will ship as many as 1 million webOS phones in its current quarter, according to estimates from Kaufman Bros. analyst Shaw Wu. Pointing to industry sources, the expert believes Palm will have seen a sudden rush between December and February thanks to the Pre Plus and Pixi Plus and should ship many more than the roughly 780,000 it moved in the earlier period. Adding Verizon may have given Palm another 550,000 to 600,000 shipments alone, according to the insiders.

Unexpectedly, those same contacts also claim that those buying the Pre Plus or Pixi Plus are often picking these over Verizon's HTC Droid Eris and Motorola Droid rather than more conspicuously aging smartphone platforms, such as BlackBerry and Windows Mobile. It's thought that Verizon sees Palm as a hedge that keeps smartphone sales higher should Android not necessarily bear fruit, although the Droid has been one of the better-selling smartphones in recent Verizon history.

Wu has also been quick to downplay the production halt scare and notes that it's not uncommon for Chinese-language companies to temporarily shut down production during the Lunar New Year as long as they ramp up production before and after the holiday.

The higher shipments would be a critical help to Palm. As the company is still trying to recover following both declining sales as well as its temporary exclusivity with Sprint, it will need multiple carrier deals and continuous updates like the Pre Plus to sustain interest. Many expect Palm to finally take on competitors like the iPhone more directly if and when the AT&T Pre and Pixi ship in the spring, although the scale is unlikely to near Apple's in at least the short term.

It wasn't very long ago that the Palm Pre

was being touted as the next iPhone killer. It seems to have gotten buried by the dozens of various Android-powered iPhone killers.

    Don't want Palm to fail

I love my iPhone. That being said, I like what Palm has been doing with the WebOS. Palm got itself in this hole by poor leadership that was clueless when it came to advancing technology. The clearest sign of this was Palm's CEO Ed Colligan's response to the launch of the iPhone, where he said PC guys just didn't have the experience to develop a smartphone. It took declining sales to bring in Jon Rubinstein who pushed forward the Cento for $99, which held the company up while working on Palm's WebOS.

Rubinstein is now Palm's CEO and it's justly deserved, he actually gets it as can be seen in the WebOS.

So I don't want Palm to fail, not because I'm a Palm fan, but Palm is actually building something decent and it's its own OS and hardware from concept to production, much like Apple, not just an iPhone wannabe. It adds something to the smartphone world and it's good competition, which is better for us.

I'm tired of twos. Two parties, two Desktop OS', and I don't want to see just iPhone and Android be our only choices in the smartphone market. If Windows Mobile 7 actually turns out to be impressive (not holding my breath), it'll be because they actually have to compete. And with more than only one challenger, it's not as simple as just copying the other guys features, you have to out do them, think up new ideas, you know, WORK.
