Vodafone UK offers SIM-only option, caters to iPhone users

Vodafone hopes to draw unlocked iPhones

Vodafone UK ended its week by extending its SIM-only options for service with a unique spin for iPhone users. A new £25 ($39) monthly plan gives those with unlocked phones both 600 minutes as well as 1GB of data, unlimited messaging and free access to BT's Wi-Fi hotspots. The strategy lets iPhone users on "other networks" switch to Vodafone without necessarily taking a step backwards, Vodafone says.

The pitch is an unusual one as it depends on iPhone owners having an unlocked version. Where unlocked phones from Nokia and others are very common in the country, residents can't currently buy an unlocked iPhone from an official source and would either have to buy one abroad, such as in France, or else jailbreak and unlock the Apple handsets themselves.

Vodafone's plan is potentially the most favorable to those on Orange; on an iPhone plan, these subscribers are typically limited to 750MB of data every month.

    O2 free unlock

In UK O2 offer free unlocking of iPhone. They unlocked mine within 14 days of request. Now on T-Mobile. £20 per month - unlimited SMS, 600 minutes and unlimited internet.

I hate the inflexible U.S. plans

This just shows how much more reasonable some other countries telcos are. It's ridiculous that U.S. customers are forced into a $70 minimum plan, whether they need it or not. The telcos here will eventually hit a wall for new smartphone customers if they don't offer lower priced plans.

Good selection of deals in UK now

When my 18 month O2 contract (£30 - unlimited web, wifi, 75mins 125 texts) expired in January I switched to a £20 monthly rolling O2 Simplicity 20 tariff (unlimited web, 600 mins, 600 texts - can cancel with 1 month notice). This is OK but miss occasional wifi access and visual voicemail. Will probably stick with it until iPhone 4G is out in July.

    Not all it seems

We've been analysing the UK markets sim only deals for a while now - http://www.simonlydealsuk.com Sim Only Deals.
The problem is that most networks earn extra revenue from supplying contracts only and not passing the benefits on to the user.

    Sim only Netherlands

In the Netherlands these sim only offers are called sim only abonnementen and they are very popular. It´s sad for the US consumers that they don´t have this broad choice of sim only deals. If you look at one of the most popular dutch websites for sim only contract, www.sim-onlyabonnementen.nl you will see that almost all telecom providers give the buyer a chanche to get a sim only contract.
