Firmware unearths some MS Project Pink specs

Microsoft's Pure and Turtle media phones have been given more tangible details thanks to the discovery of their firmware and the image creator that makes their firmware possible. The Sharp-made phones will be far from the specs needed for Windows Phone 7 and carry resolutions of 480x320 for the larger Pure and just 320x240 for the squat Turtle. Both will still be at least moderately quick using some variant of NVIDIA's Tegra, though whether this is the original or the dual-core Tegra 250 isn't known.

Some details have surfaced for the software but are similarly incomplete. The OS is known to be based on Windows CE 6 and to use technologies like Silverlight, but this could apply both to a variant of Windows Mobile 6 or a custom OS using CE as a foundation, much like the Zune HD. Either will feature PMX, or Premium Mobile Experiences, and so isn't likely to just use a stock interface.

The firmware also appears to confirm rumors of separate GSM and CDMA versions. Both the Pure and Turtle are GSM versions of their respective models; the Lion and Pride are the codenames for their CDMA equivalents.

Combined, the data portrays Microsoft as producing a less expensive complement to its Windows Phone 7 strategy that would cover the areas ruled out by the higher prices of its flagships. When it launched the new OS earlier today, it insisted it would maintain its strategy of licensing its main operating system but now may have a second, simpler platform to use for any self-branded devices.
