New design provides more storage, battery life

Sandisk said today that it has released a new design that doubles the previous capacity of flash drives used in smartphones. The iNAND 64GB embedded memory involves just a single chip and can be partitioned, with a single drive performing boot, operating system, and storage functions. Sandisk suggested this would lead to simplification of smartphone design and lower power consumption.

The new flash drives will employ Sandisk's existing 3-bit-per-cell technology which is already in use in many embedded systems, not the higher density but more experimental 4-bit per cell memory revealed late last year. The higher capacity is due to a new die stack design.

The new drives will have the same physical interface currently used in smartphone design, which should speed deployment. Sandisk will produce the new chips in capacities ranging from 4GB to 64GB.
