Nikon testing D700 sequel in the wild?

Nikon D700 replacement masked
Nikon might be testing its replacement for the D700 if a series of sightings are accurate. The camera on show, seen both in London and in Olympics host Vancouver, is a virtually perfect match for the full-frame DSLR's body but has the "Nikon" label taped over and the model number omitted. When realizing he was on camera, the Vancouver photographer reported by Nikon Rumors also took cover within the crowd to avoid further shots.
Camera makers regularly seed pro photographers with pre-release cameras to test real-world conditions and iron out bugs before final releases. Well-known photographer Vincent Laforet, for example, has acknowledged getting pre-release Canon EOS 5D Mark II and 1D Mark IV cameras.
Details of the Nikon camera in question are still vague. Rumors have circulated of a D700x or D800 that would replace the 1.5-year-old pro camera, but nothing definitive has emerged of its feature set. Most expect it to add at least 720p video, as with every other current Nikon DSLR save for the D3000, and possibly a sensor improvement similar to that for the D3s.

deliberate set-up shots
You can tell from the guy's eyes that he knows he being photographed
This is just a deliberate attempt from a company to get some viral marketing going - everyone's trying to 'pull an Apple' these days by pretending they don't do pre-publicity
I know someone with a camera covered in tap for the last year or so after he dropped it in downing street - doesn't seem to cause a stir - wonder why?
