Gefen outs Mini Display Port/MiniDP adapters

Gefen on Wednesday released a number of new products that will hook up to the newly standardized Mini DisplayPort (MDP) connection found on late-model MacBooks and iMacs. This includes the MDP to HDMI adapter, MDP to DVI adapter, and MDP to DP cable.

The compact version of DisplayPort will be able to connect to older devices or HDTVs that only have an HDMI input, as well as monitors with the DVI connection. Users with older Macs and other devices that use the DisplayPort input will also now have the ability to share or extend their displays.

The DP to DVI and MDP to HDMI adapters are priced at the same $49, while the cables cost $40 for a 6-foot length, $69 for a 10-foot length and $89 for a 15-foot version.

    What a rip-off...

I bought a miniDP-to-DP cable from Circuit Assembly guys months and months ago for $12.95

    http://estore.circuitassembly.com/products/Mini-Displayport-to-Displayport-Adapter-Cable.html

And MonoPrice has miniDP to DVI and HDMI for *MUCH* cheaper, but they works just as well.

"Gefen" sicker does not make it any better.

    Gefen unbrand

I don't understand why the Gefen name should carry any significance, they're not famous for quality or (low) price although they were famous at one time for announcing products that took months, years or never actually appeared. When I hear the Gefen name, I think of vapourware.

I was going to say at those prices for those lengths, it'd be much cheaper to just by the shortest adapter and get a DVI or HDMI cable from Monoprice. If Monoprice is now carrying it, Gefen may have come to the party too late.

You all are right on it

I just ordered a cable - 6 ft long from http://www.monoprice.com/ Search for "mini displayport to hdmi male". They are great. All for 12.95 USD including shipping. Why buy such expensive ones from "Grefen"

    No audio

As with most others like it, there is no audio carried over this (because Apple doesn't support it on their Mini-DisplayPort implementation), but I notice that Gefen is very careful to make no mention of that fact. Most other manufacturers are very clear on that point.

For the price they want, though, you could almost get the Kanex one that uses USB to provide HDMI-audio alongside the Mini-DisplayPort video.
