Report points to 2.1 on Eris before Motorola Droid

Verizon may have already begun distributing Android 2.1 updates to owners of HTC's Droid Eris handset, according to a Droid Life report. A number of users claim to have received an over-the-air update, although there are several inconsistencies to the reports. Several Eris owners allegedly received the update with HTC's Sense UI, while others did not.

Users reporting Android 2.1 without Sense have also claimed the OTA software erases all of the data on the phone. The accuracy of the reports remains unconfirmed, as it would be unlikely for HTC to release Android updates for the Eris without the customized interface.

HTC on Tuesday confirmed plans to bring the updated OS to its Eris and Hero smartphones, although the exact timing has yet to be announced. Motorola Droid owners have also been waiting patiently for the v2.1 software, following an early leak on Motorola's website that was later removed.
