Google gets FERC approval to sell energy

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) on Friday approved Google's request to become an energy seller. The software giant will not resell it, but provide power only to the company's facilities and for emergency backup power. This will allow Google to contain and manage the cost of energy it uses as a whole.

FERC is quick to point out that Google does not own or control any facilities that generate electricity to sell in the wholesale markets. With its newfound acquisition, Google joins the likes of Alcoa, Safeway and Walmart, along with nearly 1,500 other companies with subsidiaries that own similar market-based rate energy authorities.
