SE turned down building Nexus One: Nordberg

The President of Sony Ericsson, Bert Nordberg, has revealed in an interview with a Swedish publication that it turned down building the Nexus One handset for Google. Nordberg says Sony Ericsson made this decision as it does not want to have a reputation as a subcontractor but be known for making its own handsets. Instead, the device was manufactured by Taiwan's HTC.

The Nexus One is the most advanced Android handset to date, with Google doing all the marketing for the device without any obvious credit going to HTC. However, its business model is built solely around selling through Google's website and led to just 80,000 sales in one month.

Sony Ericsson hasn't provided sales figures for its own smartphones, such as the Satio and XPERIA X1, but isn't expected to compete in earnest until the spring when the XPERIA X10 family and the Vivaz line arrive in significant numbers. [via Engadget]
