iPad pre-orders to start next week?

iPad would get advance sales Feb 25

Apple might start taking pre-orders for the iPad as soon as next week, one rumor claims today. A supposedly reliable source says orders would start "as soon as" February 25th, or about a month before the projected late March target for shipping. AppAdvice hears these would be limited to US buyers and would only apply to Wi-Fi models, as 3G versions officially ship a month later.

Why the pre-orders would be limited wasn't explained but would likely stem from supply issues. Apple chose to unveil the tablet two months before production and is widely rumored to have done so to give itself enough manufacturing time.

Whether or not the rumor is accurate, Apple is known to be keeping a tight lock on any clues as to its ship date and has kept freight details private to avoid revealing the proximity of a launch. Many expect Apple to take a similar strategy to that it used for the iPhone and to orchestrate a special launch day where both retail and online orders should reach customers.

This site desperately needs an editor

    "Supposedly Reliable"?

I have no idea what that means. Is this your source, or someone else's? If this is your source, why are you reporting this information if you question the reliability of the source? I could care less what some fanboy who has your email address thinks. If it isn't your source, where did you come by this information and why aren't you reporting that fact? I see that AppAdvice heard that sales would be limited. Did they also tell you about this source that you won't back?

    While we're at it:

"Apple chose to unveil the tablet two months before production." They weren't in production of the iPad two months ago? That little tossed-aside tid-bit of info would indeed be newsworthy. But that would require corroboration... even from a 'supposedly reliable' source. I'm guessing that you actually meant something else. But whatever you meant remains a mystery.

"Why the pre-orders would be limited wasn't explained but would likely stem from supply issues." You're just guessing, aren't you? You haven't done any actual investigation, at least according to this 'article'. So by "likely" you mean, "I thought about it for 15 to 20 seconds and the first - and only - guess I had was 'supply issues.'"

Lastly, we have a confusing grammatical error. Here, let me help:

"...to orchestrate a special launch day ON WHICH both retail and online orders should reach customers"

How about some in-store demo models first?

Doesn't seem right to start taking pre-orders for a product that potential customers can't at least go to a local store and try for themselves first. Yes, I think I want one. Yes, I want to get my order in soon so I don't have to wait 3 months to get one. No, I don't want to spend $500 on something I haven't actually held in my hands.

Lots of people pre-order things without trying

them. It's called "first-on-the-block" syndrome. "Hey, look at me. You wanna try mine? Eat your heart out." I'd be tempted to do something like that, but I usually play it safe by at least listening to reviews of the shipping product. I already know I want an iPad and I doubt it could be flawed enough that I wouldn't purchase one. If I wait a month after it goes on sale, it won't make that much of a difference. Who knows. If people don't buy them at first, I might be able to pick up a discounted model if Apple drops the price.
