RIM files patent for ad system in BlackBerries

BlackBerry maker RIM has filed a patent for a system that would bring multimedia content into a message depending on what keywords are used in said message. Once the system finds a match, users can open links that lead them to more information on the particular product or service being advertised. There is also a reference in the patent about different types of user interaction will reveal a different type of multimedia content, hinting perhaps that even text or multimedia messaging may be affected by this system.

While this points to a system that would bring ads into a user's messages in a similar fashion as Google's AdWords system in a computer browser, the implementation of the system is not yet confirmed. In other words, RIM could patent the system in hopes of selling the rights to it instead of using it itself in its own handsets.

Another patent from RIM will also allow the company to see if any developers are trying to remove these ads or somehow disable them. [via CrackBerry]
