PocketGear, Handango join forces

On Tuesday, PocketGear announced it has acquired Handango, thus creating the largest cross-platform, open-source application store in the world. PocketGear itself already covered more than 2,000 mobile electronics and every main OS, while Handango offers nearly 140,000 apps for BlackBerry, Palm, Windows Mobile, Symbian and Linux platforms. The two are now nearly on par with the number of offerings in Apple's App Store.

The joint venture will now have more than 32,000 developers at its disposal and more than 40 storefront and distribution partners. This includes 4 of the 5 main cellphone makers, 4 of the top 5 US carriers and three of the main global operators. These partners include Samsung, LG, Sony Ericsson, Research in Motion, Microsoft, T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon.

PocketGear president and CEO Jud Bowman said the goal is to create an open app store ecosystem that supports every mobile device, network and application in the world.
