Quake 2, 3 FPSs ported to Android phones

A bounty to port over a popular first-person shooter game started by AndroidAndMe staffers has finally produced some results, with two developers porting over both Quake 2 and Quake 3 Arena onto Android-powered handsets. Julien developed the source code that allows Android phone that include the T-Mobile G1 to play Quake 2, though a newer and faster handset like the Droid is recommended. Thunderbirk2k meantime made it possible for Quake 3 to be played on Android, though with different results.

Julien's port produces near 30 frame per second frame rates and jumps to 50 in less complex parts of a map. At busy times with multiple players, the frame rate can be retained at more than 30FPS on Motorola's Droid. Network gaming is said to be possible, and touch and accelerometer based controls are said to be included.

The Quake 3 port involved a few weeks of adding touchscreen input support, networking and sound. On the Droid, it ran at between 20-30FPS on a small map occupied by two players. Larger, outdoor maps with four players reportedly dropped the frame rate significantly.

Either code is open-source and can be improved by other users. [via AndroidAndMe]
