Sonnet deploys Fusion D800P2 RAID system

updated 04:45 pm EST, Wed March 3, 2010

Supports up to 16TB

Sonnet says it has launched a new RAID system, the Fusion DP800P2. Described as mid-level, the unit can hold up to eight hard drives for a maximum 16TB of storage. Sonnet sells 4, 8, 12 and 16TB arrangements as defaults, but the rack can also be ordered without drives for custom installations.

RAID 0, 1, 10 and JBOD configurations can be used; dual port multipliers are said to allow for 475MBps reads and 390MBps writes. Handles make the unit easier to carry, and the drive trays are designed for hot swapping. The D800P2 costs at least $995 in a driveless version. A 4TB model is $1,995, while 8TB is $2,795, 12TB is $2,995, and 16TB is $4,595.

    Great

Another overpriced Sonnet product that works only with a very limited number of "Sonnet qualified" drive mechanisms.

Unlike the RAID enclosures from just about every manufacturer out there, Sonnet cases are very finicky about only working with drive mechanisms that are "qualified" by Sonnet.

    Here's the dirt.

Talk about lame. Like I want a mechanism that supports only these drives.

Copied from the product page above:

    (3) Sonnet Technologies has qualified and specifies the hard drives listed here for use in Fusion D800P2 storage systems. These drives were chosen for their superior performance, error handling, and reliability characteristics, especially when used in RAID groups. Sonnet recommends the use of these Enterprise/RAID edition hard drives and select, Sonnet certified desktop hard drives in your Fusion storage system to ensure system reliability and performance. STANDARD DRIVES MAY NOT BE SUPPORTED AND MAY DEGRADE SYSTEM RELIABILITY AND PERFORMANCE.

    Redundancy

When configuring this Fusion enclosure consider redundancy before choosing you level. At http://www.24hourdata.com we always suggest RAID 1 for Mirroring or RAID 10 which is a RAID 1 + RAID 0. These levels offer redundancy where as RAID 0 and JBOD do not.
