Verizon suffers US-wide data outage [U]

Verizon data, MMS fail on Wednesday

(Updated with fix, cause) Verizon cellphone customers on Wednesday reported a seemingly US-wide data outage. The issue affects both conventional data for all devices as well as messaging services like BlackBerry e-mail and MMS. Service problems don't appear to be region-specific and have been intermittent, with some already being back to normal while others have lost service a second time or have only gotten back certain features.

Verizon hasn't provided a public response, but those who have contacted the carrier were told there was no estimated time for when data would return to normal.

The glitch comes just several weeks after Verizon CTO Anthony Melone said his firm's network could handle the iPhone and after an ironic experience during the iPad unveiling at which many reporters noted that Verizon's 3G network was the most bogged down of those in use at the San Francisco event.

Update: Verizon said this morning that the issue was fixed as of roughly 8:15AM [despite some claims to the contrary - Ed.] and was largely limited to customers east of the Mississippi River. The drop was triggered by "bad switch software," according to company spokesman James Gerace.

    Must not be everywhere...

I'm in Ohio and my data is fine... listening to internet radio all morning over 3G.

    And there we go.

Verizon may come out and say it had nothing to do with a stressed network, but I'd not buy it. It was awhile before AT&T acknowledge (perhaps fully understood) that their network was failing due to increased data usage attributed to the iPhone.

Here's the thing: AT&T has had almost three years shore up it's network and it efforts, and to a larger extent, experiences, is becoming more and more apparent as network performance has steadily improved. As other heavy data phones become more popular, AT&T well understands the infrastructure required to avoid such outages. Verizon has only been dealing with this for a couple of months and is adding heavy data phones like they are going out of style.

When the Droid was coming out and Verizon started out and out attacking AT&T, many of us simply said, We'll see".

Don't get me wrong, AT&T is far from perfect, but I for one was sick of hearing about how great Verizon was - of course, they were dealing mostly with voice. I was a former Verizon customer and was totally fed up with the "other" BS they've slung at customers for years.

    Told you so

I've said all along, the issue with AT&T's service is more than coverage and there is/will be issues with Verizon as more people move to data.

Those who harpoon AT&T for their poor coverage (which I'm not denying they have problems) are not going to get an instant savior in Verizon.

    One outage...

does not a trend make. This may be a fluke. We'll see.

Nonetheless, Verizon is a "frugal" operator, and we'll see what kind of stresses their system can handle.

    Apple proven right once again.

This is the same Verizon network that can't even handle simultaneous data and voice? It crashes without the burden of combining data and voice and without the burden of the iPhone?
People can complain all they want about Apple being closed and choosing AT&T as the exclusive carrier in the first place - complaining is your right - but apparently Apple got it right again!
