iPad may just have faced iPhone OS setbacks

The iPad's slightly delayed April 3rd release may actually be the result of time spent refining the software if a rumor proves substantive. Historically accurate with other leaks, John Gruber claims that Canaccord Adams' beliefs in a hardware issue are mistaken and that the actual problem was simply polishing iPhone 3.2 and companion apps in time for a release. The roughly week-long gap was simply a virtue of the "hard-to-predict timing" that comes from turning a beta into a polished product, Gruber's source said.

Apple has had a relatively short turnaround time for the software on the tablet, with just three betas of the iPhone 3.2 SDK released since the hardware was made public in late January. Discussions had circulated that the tablet needed tougher glass to reach production and that its multi-touch needed calibration, but none of these rumors have been corroborated beyond their initial appearances.

Unlike many of the Android tablets announced in January, much of the iPad's software is specifically optimized for the larger size of the 9.7-inch screen rather than just dynamically resized.
