Drive offers eSATA, USB 2.0, FireWire 800/400

OWC has launched its OWC Mercury Elite-AL Pro mini 1TB portable drive, which it claims is the first ever 2.5-inch 1TB drive shipped with a quad interface. The bus-powered drive has eSATA, USB 2.0, and FireWire 800/400 connectivity in a brushed aluminum, fanless enclosure. In addition to the new 1TB capcity, the drives are also available with 7200RPM 500GB drives and solid-state drives up to 200GB.

Both the new 640GB and 1TB models use 5200RPM drives; the enclosure itself ships with an eSATA port, USB 2.0 port and two FireWire 800 ports and a FireWire 800-400 converter cable. It also includes Intech SpeedTools, Prosoft Engineering Data Backup and Carbon Copy Cloner.

The OWC Mercury Elite-AL Pro mini series with Mac OS X Snow Leopard (as well as older Mac systems as far back as Mac OS 8.6 using the FireWire 400 interface). The 1TB model is $300, the 640GB is $190, the 200GB SSD model is $850 and the high performance 500GB 7200rpm model is $190.

I was waiting for something like this.

I was hoping something like this would come out. But $300? That's ridiculous. I can by a 1tb USB/eSata drive for 90. The $210 premium is beyond reason.

    Just guy the case

I use quite a few OWC drives/cases. Just buy the case and find an HD you like.

    WD

Western Digital already has a 1TB external that's smaller and lighter than this for just $200. Though it's USB only.

    too little too late

a few years back this may have been interesting, but with USB 3 and other techs coming soon, this is just stupid. this should be discounted down to 90$. Quad interface where one port is not even cabled with the standard plug (fw400)? U have to be joking. OWC makes good products, but this one looks like an overpriced loser.

    Agree: overpriced

OWC used to be my #1 stop for Mac peripherals etc but lately it's been one bad experience after another. Somethings not right in Woodstock.

So, what you're saying is a drive with less features and capabilities costs a lot less? Who'd a thunk it.

Where are you getting a PORTABLE drive for $90? Portable meaning it's using a 2.5" hard drive in it? A 1TB laptop drive goes for twice that alone.
