Alex e-reader to become available on March 16th
The delayed Alex e-book reader from Spring Design may become available from the company's website on March 16th, according to an unnamed source. Previously, the device was due for a February 22nd release as well as another one during the first week in March, which was also missed. SlashGear hasn't heard what triggered the extended delay.
The reader is similar to the Nook in that it offers a 6-inch E Ink display for e-books and a 3.5-inch touchscreen LCD underneath it. The company has gone so far as to claim that it was in talks with Barnes & Noble and that the bookseller copied the Alex.
Between these two displays, users can read e-books while browsing the web on the lower display. Connection options come from Wi-Fi and an EVDO/HSPA 3G modem. Unlike its parallel, the e-reader will get content from Borders' Kobo-based online store. Supported formats will include Adobe ePub, while MP4 and Flash video along with MP3 audio files are likewise compatible.
The device is expected to cost $359 when it ships, regardless of the timeframe.
