UK to expand 3G frequencies in August

New Ofcom 3G rules to come into effect in August
UK telecommunications regulator Ofcom has proposed using 3G technologies at 2G frequencies in the UK, with an amended document that should be approved this August. In it, rules are updated to Ultra Wide Band usage, while 3G network technology will be deployed at the 900MHz and 1,800MHz bands which are currently restricted to the 2G GSM network.
Even if the approval goes through as scheduled, the infrastructure and hardware is not yet available to fully take advantage of the 3G network, however. A hotly contested issue was the devaluation of purchased 3G spectrum by wireless operators in the UK, which was decided in an EU ruling last year. 3G bands were bought at a high cost, as operators were told it was the only place they could operate.
Ofcom will deliberate on the updates (pdf) until May 7th, which include allocating wireless CCTV at 2.4 and 5.8GHz, restricting voice transmissions to 433MHz and allowing National Rail to put up 24GHz radar on train crossing without needing a license for each application.
