Verizon Android 2.1 for Droid brings improvements

Verizon has released details of its Android 2.1 update for the Motorola Droid, which brings with it a number of new features and fixes. As expected, users can now perform multi-touch gestures, such as pinch-to-zoom in the browser, the photo gallery and Google Maps. A Weather and News app has been added, along with voice-to-text entry. The gallery also gets a new, 3D layout, and users get live wallpapers previously seen only on the Nexus One.

Less significant improvements include Yahoo Mail support as well as a Google Maps update that enables synchronizing with the desktop version of Google Maps with personlized suggestions. Those relying on Google Maps Navigation at night will be given with a new night mode that dims the screen for less distraction.

Over-the-air updates will also no longer require users to re-enter their e-mail accounts

The upgrade is free and should be pushed to all Droid users on Verizon's network soon, although no specific timetable has been given.
