Leak: early iPad sales could outpace original iPhone

iPad pre-orders said in hundreds of thousands
The iPad's pre-orders have been strong enough that they could outrun even the original iPhone launch, according to a new slip of details from the company. Pre-orders have already reached into the "hundreds of thousands" in the past week and are predicted by WSJ sources to be strong enough that there could be more iPads sold in the first quarter of sales than the 1.12 million the iPhone managed in its own first full quarter in 2007. Unofficial estimates have already put Apple's pre-order tally at 200,000 units, not including in-store pickups.
The sales spike hasn't been given an explanation, though the iPad's feature set for the price has improved considerably over that of the first-run iPhone. Both cost $499, but the absence of a required cellular plan along with the more computer-like design have led many to treat the iPad as equivalent to a netbook in their buying habits.
In spite of the fervor, Apple may have had some of its most hoped-for iPad launch plans delayed. The sources assert that the company is still trying to negotiate content deals even with two weeks left before launch. Among these would be $1 iTunes TV shows and more advanced formatting for periodicals and textbooks to take advantage of the iPad's form factor.
Most of the delays are thought to have stemmed from old-world content providers worried that the deals would erode their existing revenue streams. Print publishers have often been worried about advertising rates on e-readers, and TV studios can at times be at odds with cable and satellite providers that might threaten to pull channels if Internet TV lures customers away from subscriptions.
Sales of more than 1 million iPads would give Apple a third of Amazon's rumored 3 million plus Kindle sales, which themselves took two years to reach even with lower pricing on devices and books.

The first-run iPhones were 4/8GB: $499/$599

Except this isn't that big of a deal. The original phone had supply issues (thus limiting sales) and once you got past the "I've got to have it now!" crowd of people, many waited for iPhone 2.0 and Apple to address the issues with the original (few apps, no 3G, lame phone, etc). Add to that the questions as to the product as a whole (since it was a new product with a new OS).
The iPad, meanwhile, has the buzz plus the fact that the OS is far less a question mark than 3 years ago (since they've had 3 years to refine it and for people to use it).
Plus, the iPad is a whole lot cheaper and doesn't require a monthly fee. So you really need to compare it's sales to the iPod Touch than the iPhone.
Oh, and IIRC, the iPhone 3G sales blew the iPhone sales out of the water.

with the iPad, there's no two-year carrier contract to frighten people away. If the iPad sales don't surpass total Kindle sales this year, I'll be very surprised. Even if just the Apple loyalists buy the iPad, sales should be better than Kindle sales. I'm not putting down the Kindle, I'm merely using it as a sort of tablet comparison. Apple has all those competition-destroying retail stores and they're going to be packed with potential iPad buyers. Consumers won't leave the store without one.

To the contrary, it is a huge deal. The original iPhone had six months to build to a fever pitch. When it went on sale, people queued-up around the block to buy them. When I got off work that day, I considered myself lucky to have found an AT&T Store with the iPhone still in stock. The iPhone started hot and went nowhere but up.
When the iPad went on preorder, it had only been about two months since it was first announced. Remember also that everyone knew what the iPhone was about. It was a phone. The same cannot be said of the iPad. Peruse any Apple fan site and you will find a majority of Apple fans and bashers who really don't understand exactly what Apple new wonder is or what they can use it for.
This makes it all the more stunning that iPad sales are outpacing those of the iPhone. There are no yeah-buts. The iPad is turning into one of the greatest consumer electronic products of all time.

Oh, you're so right. Only two months since it was announced. Well, h*** then, if they get more than 10 sales, it's a big deal!
The iPhone did not need 6 months to build momentum. It had it day one and would have had lines out the door if they sold it in April instead of June. It wasn't like Apple was leaking little facts about the iPhone to build up the fever. If anything, they let it wallow in 'pre-release' state too long, as it faded from top of people's minds in April/May.
Remember also that everyone knew what the iPhone was about. It was a phone. The same cannot be said of the iPad. Peruse any Apple fan site and you will find a majority of Apple fans and bashers who really don't understand exactly what Apple new wonder is or what they can use it for.
What the h*** are you talking about? It's a giant iPod touch. You can do with it everything you can an iPod with, and more. We aren't talking a revolutionary device here, but an evolutionary one. Or is that just too obvious for the "It's the greatest device ever invented!" crowd?

I'm sorry, but it will have to do a lot more than just outpace iPhone sales to do that. In fact, it would need to last at least 5 years, or incredible sales, to even put it close to the iPod on that list.
And bear in mind the Walkman still beats both of them in that category.

Why exactly does anyone care how this product does against the Kindle? The Kindle is a device designed around doing one thing very well. It's a book reader.
The iPad is a jack-of-all-trades device, of which one of the things it does is allow you to read books (which the iPod touch does as well). It has a much larger potential market than the Kindle. But the # of people looking at buying an iPad are not doing it with 'reading books' high on their list of uses (if on the list at all).
You might as well also compare it to GPSes, hand-held compasses, alarm clocks, music players, portable DVD players, netbooks, laptops, AppleTVs, Tivos, radios, back scratchers, jewelry, newspapers, TV sets, etc, etc, etc.

Oh, and one other thing. I'm sure if, somehow, the iPad doesn't outsell the Kindle, people will either use any of my arguments, or, more likely, claim that Amazon is padding their sales numbers to keep the top slot.
