Windows Phone 7 to get copy-and-paste after launch

MS denial of WP7 copy-paste just stalling tactic

Despite claims to the contrary, Microsoft is still developing a way to use copy-and-paste text on Windows Phone 7, a "person close to the den" leaked today. He claimed that Microsoft has wanted it all along but had to cut it out of the initial version to make the late 2010 launch target. An update would come "soon" afterwards, veteran Microsoft follower and MIX10 attendee Long Zheng was told.

The details contradict what Microsoft had been telling MIX10 guests and the public earlier in the week. It had claimed that users didn't really need copy-and-paste features and that WP7's ability to auto-populate phone numbers through data detectors in the OS meant that it wouldn't be necessary. Both statements were regarded as odd given that Windows Mobile 6 already had the ability to clip text and that a new version of Office for WP7 would virtually demand the feature for editing.

Developers at Microsoft explained to Zheng that the company already knows how it will implement the feature and simply wants to integrate the feature properly in its new context.

The absence of the feature on launch is nonetheless considered a misstep for the new OS, since its role as Microsoft's new flagship mobile platform will make common Windows Mobile features like copy-and-paste text essential for business users. The addition of the feature was a significant factor in helping the iPhone get more business adoption, and its relatively intuitive form is credited with luring some BlackBerry and Windows Mobile users away from their platforms.

    as another commenter stated

they are trying to figure out how to implement iPhone's copy-paste method without being too obvious and inviting a lawsuit.

What method? Highlighting text with your finger? Give me a break. I don't think Apple's method is unique or brilliant. Its obvious. Like their gestures.

    You have to wonder..

...if the people who manage Win Phone 7 are that stupid, or just very smart and come up with these announcements to keep Win Phone 7 in the news. It won't be out before the end of the year, so they have to do something to keep it fresh. In a month, they will announce that they have found a way to address to the market's wishes and will support Cut & Paste at launch.
Of course, it was there all the time, but nobody talked about it, now they got $M's worth of free coverage, got people to talk about their platform as if it was something new or relevant, and there will be some pundits who will analyze the story and laud MS for changing and being more responsive to users. All that for the cost of a handful of press releases and arranged leaks. That would be brilliant.

The first sign of something being "obvious" is that no one thought of doing it before.

I didn't say implementation wasn't hard. I said the idea is intuitive. I know how to use it.

But I am a moron. That part is true.

No, Dammit! When I told you to copy the iPhone, I meant the most recent release, not the original release.

Long Zheng is not a good source of info

Long Zheng runs a site called "Istartedsomething". He is even more of a windows fanboy than Paul Thurott with his "windows showcase".
