HP tablet pegged at $544 in Europe

The in-progress HP slate may actually be more expensive than the iPad when it goes on sale, a Spanish hands-on has revealed. The tablet is said to be shipping to the US in June, and in Europe would carry a price of 400 euros, or $544. While not a direct US translation, the price could make it more expensive than the $499 iPad even while it ships later.

The testers at Clipset also note that the hardware is essentially a netbook adapted to tablet form. HP's design is "fat" compared to the half-inch iPad and uses an ordinary Intel Atom processor to drive Windows 7. Some of its netbook heritage comes through in expansion, which includes a rear camera, USB and a card reader. The design is unique in having a rubber backing that makes it easier to grip.

While not yet official, the tablet is considered Microsoft's best hope before the Courier for competition in the tablet arena. It's already known to use an virtually stock version of Windows 7 and, since it uses an x86 processor, to support in-browser Flash out of the box. Whether it will be capable of HD video, how much storage it will hold and other characteristics are still mysteries.

ha ha ha ha ha ha. I guess these other companies only hope is to put something out there and hope it sells. Fail.

    As predicted . . .

I said I'd be amazed if they could do it at a cheaper price. Now we'll wait for the other shoe to drop - the battery life.

We won't see any true rivals here until the ARM/Android machines ship, or MS pulls a real surprise based around WinMob7 (unlikely, given they love to talk about products years before they ship - or don't ship).

    Battery

As JulesLt stated, the biggest differentiation (other than the OS, which is arguably better on the iPad, but opinion comes into play heavily there) will be battery life. If the HP Slate gets less than 5 hours battery life, compared to the iPad's 10 hours, it won't matter how much better some of the other features are, it's going to be a flop. I'd guess it gets real-world performance of less than 2 hours battery life from what I've been hearing too, which just means it bombs completely, but obviously I'm withholding final judgement until it's released.

    the Slate may be cheaper

the Slate may be cheaper than the iPad if the price in Europe is 400 euros.
In Europe all prices are presented with VAT included, so the 400 is with VAT included! That means that the price without taxes is closer to 465USD - assuming that VAT in Spain is 16%. By comparison the iPad in Europe should be around 430 euros.
In the news you quote they actually state that it will be less expensive than the iPad.

The Slate May Also Be Cheaper ...

... if the price of onions in China drops signifcantly below its 30-year low.

The Slate may cost $45 more, but at least its battery only lasts half as long, it will be clunkier to use, and it's exact specs and ship date are still a question mark.

    Cheaper than a 3G iPad?

Don't the rumors also say that the HP Slate will come with 3G as standard equipment? If so then that makes it around $85 cheaper than the 16GB 3G iPad.

    The "User Experience"?

Ahhhhh but I can run Windows and thousands upon thousands of apps developed for the Windows platform. I can picture Ballmer spout out "Let's see Apple catch up to THAT!". No gate keeper / App approval needed thank you. The $45 premium is well worth the computing "User Experience" - installing and running what you like.

    Yes, The User Experience

Oh the joy of trying to run an OS and Apps that have been designed for keyboard and mouse, except, of course for all the malware that will run smoothly in the background without user intervention. So don't forget to include the price of the annual license for the anti-virus.
I hope Apple never catches up to that, and the gatekeeper keeps the software safe.

iPad will cost about 475 euro

its always more expensive and includes taxes, the euro price is not a good basis to calculate a US price.

And Who Wouldn't Want To Run Windows ...

... and the thousands upon thousands of apps developed for the Windows platform on a netbook that's been converted to tablet form?

AutoCAD should just scream on this thing (although perhaps not in the way one would want an app to scream.)

Per jfgilbert's comments, I can vividly picture Baldmer telling everyone that they just took a netbook, snapped it in half, tossed away the keyboard side and put Windows Tablet Edition Du Jour on it. Apple would have to throw the gearshift into reverse and step on the gas for a few years to back up ... er ... "catch up" to that.
