MS says Windows 7 SP1 adds no major features
Microsoft has posted some of the first official details of its first service packs for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008. Most of the new developments in Service Pack 1 will be for the server OS, the company said. It adds RemoteFX, a more advanced virtual machine technology that supports newer graphics like Flash or Silverlight, and dynamic memory, which can automatically shift memory to virtual machines that need it.
For Windows 7, most of the changes will be existing fixes rolled up into the one update. It will, however, add a new version of the Remote Desktop Client that uses RemoteFX. The company also just recently dropped the requirement for hardware virtualization support to use Windows 7 Professional's special XP Mode, which should let less expensive PCs run the older OS in a virtual machine.
No timelines have been made public today, but most expect SP1 for either OS to ship late this year both as a free download and built into new copies.
