Buffalo MiniStation Cobalt packs added speed
Buffalo on Monday put out what it hopes should be one of the fastest portable hard drives available. While using a regular 2.5-inch hard disk on the inside, the MiniStation Cobalt adds USB 3.0. The 5Gbps interface gives the drive extra theoretical headroom but should avoid bottlenecking regular transfers as well.
The Cobalt comes with Windows software that uses a RAM cache to potentially speed up transfers by 25 percent. Both Macs and Windows PCs can support the drive, and those still using USB 2.0 can use the new MiniStation at the older standard's speeds. Buffalo hasn't divulged pricing but plans 500GB and 640GB versions that will ship in April.
