VZ Android, BlackBerry get access this week

Verizon today said that the 3G-capable version of Skype will reach its smartphones this Thursday. The download will reach all of the carrier's modern Android and BlackBerry devices, including flagships like the Droid and Tour as at least an optional download, either through the web or through Android Market. New BlackBerry users also find the Skype app sitting in the Downloads folder the moment the phone is active.

As promised, the Skype app provides full VoIP calling over 3G, whether for free to other Skype clients or through paid SkypeOut minutes to regular phone numbers. More devices should have access over time as Verizon adds handsets like the Nexus One to its roster.

Carriers have previously tried to block Skype as it potentially lets customers drop to plans with fewer voice minutes, but Verizon, AT&T and others are believed to have relented both due to FCC scrutiny as well as recognizing that it can drive greater use of smartphones and their more lucrative data plans.
