iBookstore may have whole Project Gutenberg on launch

iPad would have public domain books on day one

Another leak from the iBookstore has surfaced on Thursday and suggests Apple is stocking up on public domain books. The same hunt that reportedly found $10 bestsellers has found titles clearly taken from Project Gutenberg, whose goal is to post free versions of all non-copyrighted books online. The selection hasn't been counted by AppAdvice but could include all 30,000 titles and should have classics like Mark Twain's library as well as modern-day books from open-access advocates like Cory Doctorow, among others.

Adding public domain books isn't an uncommon tactic for an e-reader launch or update, as companies have often used this to quickly swell the catalog or provide an incentive to customers who might not want to spend early on. Sony added one million e-books from Google to support its Reader line, and Kobo plans to preload 100 free books on its eReader to get newcomers started.

Many Project Gutenberg texts are already in Apple's preferred ePub format, making their addition to the iBookstore relatively trivial.

Now we won't see the c*** apps that want to sell these books at $0,99, good move Apple.

What c*** apps are you talking about? I have Stanza. Download any/all these books now, for free (plus a bunch of others).

Oh, and you don't need to go through the iBookstore to get them either, such that they're then locked to your phone.

Its just another option to get the books, nothing wrong with that. Apple uses the open epub standard so these books shouldn't be locked to the iBookstore. Epub is also readable on the computer so probably (hopefully) we'll be able to read them in iTunes and export the Gutenberg books to other readers.

Look in the iPhone app book section and a lot of them try to sell a Gutenberg book at $0,99, these are the c*** apps that pollute the appstore.

They use epub, but I'm sure they've added Fairplay to it (I seriously doubt the book publishers want non-DRM electronic copies floating about ala music and video). And if it comes from the iTMS, it'll get DRM'd. It would be too much trouble trying to mark up files that need vs. not needing DRM.

Why would Apple Fairplay non-copyrighted material? I think you're pretty excitable...

As I said, it'll probably get DRM because they would otherwise have to keep track of all public domain vs. non-public domain works (which could be also restricted between countries).

And all their items are fairplayed on download, so then iTunes would also have to know which type of book or not it is.

Oh, and even your free apps on the appStore have DRM.
