Apple ships first iPad orders

Apple ships iPads early, camera adapters late

Several Electronista and MacNN readers noted this morning that their iPad orders have started shipping. The devices are spread across multiple capacities and are shipping well ahead of the April 3rd target date. Many of these orders are the very first, taken just minutes after Apple opened pre-orders.

Apple is likely to tell its shipping firms to hold the tablet and avoid delivering before the official release date, as it has with past iPhone launches.

Also, the company this weekend added the iPad Camera Connection Kit to the online Apple Store after a few weeks' delay. It gives users adapters for both SD cards and USB to upload photos and is now known to automatically invoke the Photos app to import shots. The kit costs $29 but won't arrive until late April.

    iPad Shipped, but..

I got the email from Apple this morning telling me my iPad had shipped. I expected to see it a bit earlier than Saturday until I checked the tracking and saw that it shipped from China. It still may get here early but Saturday will be fine.

    Carrier Has Instructions to HOLD

If you think you're getting the iPAD ahead of schedule, think again. The carrier has Instructions to HOLD the shipment until Saturday 4-3 No Matter What.

    I know because I'm a shipper.

    Tracking

I also received a tracking number but no estimated delivery date. According to ups time in transit map it should arrive Thursday or Friday. Also there is an extra UPS charge for Saturday delivery so I doubt they would pay extra to hold it back til Saturday

Definitely April 3rd at the Earliest

I'm a March 12th 5:34am Pacific Time orderer (64GB Wi-Fi only iPad, no accessories or anything else in the shipment) and mine is already winging its way to me.

But much like my iPhone 3GS that had a scheduled delivery date of TWO DAYS before the official release date according to the shipper's website, when the day of that early delivery arrives you should expect to see the dreaded "delivery exception" magically appear in the tracking system courtesy of our Uncle Steve. While none of us regular consumers are truly entitled to any company's product before they are officially released, the "cool factor" of having an iPhone or an iPad in one's possession even hours before it's "legally allowed" is undeniable.

I just hope that they really do deliver on Saturday like they said they would (both Apple and UPS when I called them) and that it doesn't turn into a "wait until Monday" thing.

That's a 'cool factor'? I guess it depends on what group you're talking to. It's like Harry Potter geeks getting all jizzed up by getting their book a day early.

Yeah, you'd have to wait two whole days, when everyone else in the world is already enjoying the magic and brilliance of the device. And if the Rapture came Sunday, you might never have gotten a hold of one before being called up.

Then again, I'm sure that's all they use in heaven. They probably even got them pre-Saturday.
