Apple to sell iPads at 9AM Saturday along with Best Buy

iPad launch to include personal setup for free

Apple today said that the formal launch of the iPad this Saturday would start at 9:00AM at its stores. It also confirmed leaked Best Buy plans and says the tablet will be available in the third-party retail chain at the same time, although these aren't expected to open early. It's not clear whether those Apple stores that normally open later will honor the 9:00AM availability.

An offer is being extended to early buyers, all of whom can opt for a free personal setup that will help configure e-mail, load apps and otherwise ready the iPad for use immediately. The plan suggests that, unlike the iPhone or iPod, Apple won't require the iPad be connected to iTunes before it can be used.

All 221 US Apple stores should have stock and will be holding workshops the same day to get users started.

    Apple Store Omaha opening early

The Apple Store in Omaha normally opens at 10 am, but is opening at 9 am on April 3rd. I have a business rep appointment at 9:30 to pick up my iPad - no waiting in line.

    Hype

Nothing but hype to get pictures in the press of people lining up.

    lining up

Of course it's all about getting people to line up. Because there are enough fools, er...I mean fans, who just need to be there. h***, some reader on MacIntouch said he was going to stand in line early to get in. Not to buy one, because he's waiting for 3G. But just to go look at it.

Seriously folks. It's a freakin' big iPod Touch. People act like it was a grilled cheese sandwich which has the image of the Virgin Mary on it or something.

    nothing surprising here

Apple has been opening early for big launches for a while. gives them more time to deal with folks.
as for this setup, it's likely not really anything more than how they unbox and start up your phone when you buy it. 5 minutes with your sales person who can help you set up email, punch in your apple id etc. if you want more than that, there's workshops and online stuff.
