Vodafone may take over Verizon in deal

Verizon and Vodafone are considering a shift in ownership that could shake up the cellphone industry, a rumor claimed this morning. While Vodafone already owns a stake in Verizon, the two are aiming to change the financial relationship and may include anything from a dividend payout to either a complete spinoff of Verizon or even a full acquisition of the American carrier by Vodafone. A BusinessWeek tipster said a decision isn't yet close and may hinge on Verizon paying off its debts from taking over Alltel last year.

Some analysts believe a Vodafone buyout of Verizon is most likely as it would help the company unify services and potentially eliminate the debt sooner.

Either of the changes in ownership levels would have a major impact on the cellular industry. A fully independent Verizon would no longer necessarily need to synchronize its plans with a European partner and could make world phones that more readily support other networks, such as Orange or O2. Vodafone taking over Verizon in turn would put a second major European carrier in the US and could lead to more harmonized device releases.

    interesting

I just got back from Ireland, where I used a Verizon global device on vodafone IE. Great service- I'd love for their partnership to continue.

OTOH, I don't want another European company controlling wireless services here...

Please do one or the other

ingenious, I had completely the opposite over several attempts with VZW on Voda. Nothing worked right, and I was one of 20 in my company. My last company switched to VZW and switched back after a month and several hundred people who couldn't use their phones.

To me, either set VZW free so it can roam wherever internationally, or buy it out and make it global GSM/LTE.

The question is on this report - is it VZW or VZ as a whole? I'm guessing this is about Verizon Wireless and not Verizon (since Voda owns no part of Verizon, and I'm guessing can't come close to affording buying it out). In that case, I'm not sure VZ would want to sell VZW since a) VZW contributes nicely to VZ's profits, and b) VZ is stopping its FiOS push, so their only growth platform is wireless.
