Clues point to international iPad launching April 24th

Apple Canada retail hints iPad timing

A new leak Apple may have already fenced off April 24th for its Canadian, and possibly international, launches for the iPad. Some Apple store workers in Canada have reportedly been told that the 24th and 25th are "blackout periods," or days when they can't voluntarily book the day off. Since Apple in the past has used these blackouts to prepare for the iPhone 3G and other major launches, it's believed that the company has already reserved the 24th as launch day and wants to guarantee staffing levels.

Officially, Apple hasn't committed to anything more than a late April release for Canada and eight other countries. An April 24th date would nonetheless be consistent with this timing and would be Apple's last opportunity to sell the iPad worldwide on a Saturday. The chief concern at present would be shipping, as Canada doesn't normally accept Saturday mail and would have to either make special exceptions or arrange for weekend shipping on all of the first-wave orders.

If in sync with the three week gap between pre-orders and actual shipping already seen in the US, advance purchases would start late this week, on April 2nd. No Canadian carriers have provided 3G data plans, however, and so any advance sales campaign might need these as well.

    Saturday shipping in Canada

Canada Post made an exception and delivered the last Harry Potter book on a Saturday, so there is a precedent.

    Why Saturday?

What the h*** is the point of this Saturday launch idea, particularly given the obvious obstacles in relation to delivery? Why not Friday or Apple's favourite day, Tuesday?

    Re: Why Saturday?

Actually, the real question is "Why not Monday or Tuesday"?

The only obvious reason for Saturday is that most people don't work, so they can waste their time standing in lines to see the thing. But don't talk to me about great press coverage. No one pays attention to the news on weekends (why the really bad news is always announced right before a weekend or, better yet, a holiday weekend).

Sure, there might be some news crews out, but that's part of the playbook ("Christmas time, go to malls. It's going to snow, send crews to grocery/hardware stores. It's snowing, send crews to hills to watch sledders. It's really hot. Send crews to street corners looking for kids playing with fire hydrant. Apple releasing next god device. Send crew to mall.) But the only ones who'll care are those already drooling over the iPad, so there's little to gain.

Apple usually announces new products on Tuesday because it's the start of the week. They can hold a news cycle for a day, maybe two in the tech circles. And since people actually pay attention then, it gets the information into as many eyes as possible.
