Dell claims Mini 10 staying put

Dell this afternoon denied a major rumor that it would shifted away from the Mini 10. The Taiwanese rumor allegedly had "no basis in fact," the company said. It pointed to recent launches like the T-Mobile HSPA+ version and the WiMAX model for Clear as its evidence of sustained interest.

The Mini 10 is "not going anywhere," spokeswoman Anne said.

Her response was sparked by rumors that both Dell and HP were scaling back their production to focus on more profitable ultraportables with 11.6-inch screens or larger. Netbook interest has been slowing significantly in early 2010 and may be shifting back to notebooks or even tablets like the iPad.

Although likely accurate given the Mini 10's role as Dell's only true netbook, such denials aren't uncommon in the PC industry regardless of the actual revision schedule. Companies are frequently eager to avoid a premature drop-off in sales as customers wait for new models.
