Gmail takes cue from iPad mail UI

Google joined in the slew of iPad news today by adding its own customized web interface for Gmail. The new version is an extension of the Android and iPhone viewers and takes a cue from the iPad's own mail suite. The normal message list remains on the left, but messages and whole conversations now appear on the right. Other buttons that would have normally needed an overlay can now stay on the screen.

The UI won't be exclusive to the iPad and should be available for any tablet with an HTML5-capable browser in the future. Google added that it won't necessarily have a tablet-optimized version of every page as certain sites should work better with the original, desktop pages.

On top of the web changes, Google said it would adapt Google Mobile App for the iPad and is investigating "new ideas" to improve its features beyond the iPhone edition.
