ICD Gemini takes on iPad with 1080p, 3G calls

ICD Gemini combines Tegra 2 with 11in tablet

ICD is planning a second tablet beyond the Ultra that would potentially upstage the iPad. The leaked Gemini would have a larger 11.2-inch, 1366x768 screen, and like the Ultra would use an NVIDIA Tegra 250; the 1GHz chip would give it the ability to play 1080p video, including in Flash 10.1 when it becomes available. It will still run Android, though Engadget doesn't say which version, and will not only carry 3G and 802.11n Wi-Fi but make phone calls.

Extras should be equally important, as ICD's tablet will have both a 5-megapixel autofocusing camera on its back as well as a front, fixed-focus 2-megapixel camera on the front for video chat. Only 4GB of storage is built-in, but this should be braced by an SDHC card slot to add up to 32GB more. True GPS should be onboard versus the 3G iPad's assisted mapping, and the battery will both be higher capacity (40Wh versus 25Wh) but user-replaceable.

The startup tablet designer hasn't said when the Gemini will appear or at what price; the Ultra is due later this year when Verizon's 4G network is active, but its larger cousin doesn't necessarily have to wait for cellular access to go on sale.

clearly designed to be set on the table

heavy, designed to be set on the table, why should it be a tablet...given its meant to be a table top, give it a nice keyboard, and allow some to adjust the angle of the screen for better viewing. True, it becomes a notebook computer at that point, but if its not designed to be held in one hand....then being a notebook makes tons more sense.

It should be fairly easy for companies to

build tablets with better hardware than the iPad especially if they're building them in smaller quantities. On paper they'll look better in the specs department than the iPad. When the iPad hardware is set, companies can easily add features that "improve" upon the original which excites the geeks. It appears this ICD Gemini will have "everything". These companies are still not going to have the marketing clout of Apple or the retail stores to push these products and they will fall short in overall sales.

The only way Apple can fend off these challengers is with a better user interface, better ecosystem and great customer support. I think that should be enough.

    1080p video?

What's the point of 1080p video capability when the screen is 1366x768? Does that processor simply downgrade the video to 720p?

its so they can get all the buzzwords in there. I can still remember how every iPod "killer" touted FM Radio this way.

:MEGAPHONE< It's not about the hardware!

It's not about the hardware, it's about the ecosystem, it's about the pairing of software and hardware.

These "competitors" are the equivalent of having a 10 inch d*** but not knowing how to use it.

I'm waiting for one of these manufacturers to come out and say nothing about the hardware, but everything about how they have revolutionized the touch interface.

Never going to happen, but until then, it seems that, for the large majority of consumers, Apple will be the go-to for a useful product.

    This must be......

.... about the 10th announcement of another competitive device to be compared to the iPad. I'm willing to wait 6-12 months to see how the buying public responds. I have a feeling most of these "iPad Killers" will have folded by then.

    Re: Megaphone

It's a good thing it's running Android, a fairly full-featured OS also based exclusively on running touch-oriented apps. This is a much more serious competitor than the HP Slate running Win 7, for example. If they can nail the battery life, price and launch apps, this thing is looking pretty decent. Now watch them do something stupid like only allocate 256MB for app storage, like many of these Android phones on the market.

    Assisted GPS > "True" GPS

Assisted GPS is GPS plus more capability. It is NOT somehow lesser or some weak imitation or substitute. The article makes it sound as though the Gemini's offering is better than the iPad's when, in fact, it's the opposite.
