Xbox 360 can now use any USB drive

Microsoft as promised has pushed out its Xbox 360 USB storage update to consoles. The upgrade lets users set aside between 1GB and 16GB of space for anything an Xbox 360 can save to a hard drive or official memory card, including Xbox 360 game installs, Xbox Live Arcade games, saved games and media. Some space can be set aside for a Mac or PC to hold space, and up to two drives can be attached at a time.

Updating should only require booting the Xbox. While nearly any drive should work, Microsoft recommends using a fast drive to prevent bottlenecks. SanDisk's promised Xbox 360 USB Flash Drive ships next month but is already up for pre-order at Amazon (see above) and costs $35 for an 8GB model pre-formatted for the Xbox and with a month of free Xbox Live Gold access.
