iPad starting to show supply constraints

Best Buy late Wednesday confirmed that it had sold out of iPads four days after launch. While some stores had sold out on launch day, all 673 of the participating retail shops now say they won't have replacement stock until Sunday the 11th. It wouldn't say how many had sold or how much would be in stock with the second wave.

Apple itself is believed to have a much healthier supply but has also been encountering periodic sellouts in the past few days. As of Wednesday, CNET was told that 5th Avenue flagship in New York City was out of all but the 64GB iPad, while the Carlsbad, California store was receiving stock daily but would often sell out before the evening.

The data doesn't supply a complete picture of early iPad sales but indirectly backs suggestions of continued strong sales that would have crested past 500,000 Wednesday and are already estimated to have passed 600,000 today. Such sales are rare for e-readers or tablets, which have usually either sold out only due to low supply or have usually been targeted at niche markets.

    i wonder

a lot of naysayers were booing the 300k sales on Saturday despite the whole 'Easter' thing. I wonder if they would change their tune if Apple sent out a press release tomorrow that they had already gone over 1 million sales. in 5 days (their stores were closed on Sunday)

    They're everywhere in NYC!

Just not available to buy, haha! I was at a photoshoot last night and there were 2 there. At my friend's place on Tuesday night, it turned out 3 other people bought one. I went with a coworker to the Soho store yesterday during lunch and he picked one up from the new shipment they just got.

I think it's really true, once you get your hands on it, it's a completely different experience from the iPhone and it sells itself once you touch it.

The whole 'easter' thing? I'm sorry, but I was under the impression the iPad release was THE religious holiday.

And just because Apple stores were closed Easter, doesn't mean it doesn't count as a sales day. Best Buy was open, and you could order on line. Oh, and the 5th avenue store was open, as it always is.

So, how do you go from "Expected to go past 600,000 today" into a press release that apple sold 1 million by yesterday (or today)?

And of course they would change their tune. I think investors would change their tune if Apple said they sold only 5 or if they sold 5 billion as well. What's your point?

    oops

Well, you were close. It was 450,000 so far. Does that mean some people with the "It will sell a billion in a week!" will have to change their tune.
