RIM snaps up QNX to make mystery "intelligent peripherals"

updated 11:00 am EDT, Fri April 9, 2010

RIM buys embedded OS for BlackBerry, car tech

RIM on Friday said it had bought QNX from Harman International in an unusual acquistion. The maker of embedded operating systems was bought partly to put QNX into car systems but will also help the BlackBerry. In an unusual move, RIM admitted QNX would be useful for unnamed "intelligent peripherals" that would likely work in tandem with smartphones.

What these would involve wasn't mentioned, but RIM has lately focused on audio hardware, such as its car speakerphone and its BlackBerry Music Gateway. Harman International is best known for the Harman Kardon and JBL audio lines, but it's not known if any of QNX's research for these will transfer over with the takeover.

Any developments will have to wait until the deal is government-approved, which RIM expected to happen within 45 days.
