HTC says own OS depends on certain terms

HTC is considering the possibility of making its own mobile OS, the company's CFO Cheng Hui-ming mentioned in an interview on Tuesday. He was careful to note that HTC still "continue[s] to assess" its options but said that there could be definite advantages to making both hardware and software, like Apple and RIM do for the iPhone and BlackBerry. It would depend on "multiple factors" being in alignment to justify the move, Cheng told Bloomberg.

The executive was mum on rumors that HTC might buy Palm and said there was no set deadline for when it would want to have an OS of its own.

HTC has made a business out of making phones for other operating systems and is currently the star manufacturer for both Android and Windows Mobile. In tying itself to others, however, it has been dependent on how well these companies develop their software. Until it shifted most of its attention to Android, HTC was hurt by Windows Mobile's unpopularity. Most of HTC's success has come from customizing the OS; the HD2's brisk sales were owed in part to a custom UI that added multi-touch and masked most of the finger-hostile elements of Windows Mobile.

A self-made OS would decouple HTC from these companies, as it could release phones on its own schedule and add hardware-specific features at any time. The company would face a number of challenges if it developed its own software, such as the steep research and development costs as well as the difficulty of creating and supporting a new mobile app platform when Apple and Google already have years of lead time.

    Good for HTC

Finally another hardware manufacturer that isn't just going to keep slapping on Android with a custom UI that they'll never update again once the Next Model comes out. Before it was Windows Mobile, than came Android...

A step in the right direction for HTC... although if they JUST bought Palm most of the work could be done for them.

    Good Luck

The question is can or are they capable of developing a very robust OS (financially and technically)? It's a shot in the dark because WebOS failed, WinMobile failed, Symbian is trying.... A bad OS can really bring the entire HTC hardware lines right down the toilet. Can they come out with something different than other OS without getting sued by them? This is a very challenging route to commit. So far only the giant corporation with huge resources sustains. So Good Luck.

I think webOS failed because Palm

doesn't know how to run a money-making business. Palm had been in a slide for quite a while. The launch of the Pre was an outright disaster and suffered from hardware and distribution problems from the very beginning. I don't recall any major problems with the OS, though. A company like HTC that builds very good hardware could probably make a success of webOS. I'd like to see HTC drop Android to second tier OS and use webOS instead, but I know that's not going to happen.

    HTC should

buy palm and put web OS on there phone. Its an awesome OS that palm blew it with there cheap phones. Probably due to being strapped for cash. Googles OS is not bad but web OS on a nexus one type phone would be a killer phone. Come on HTC, BUY PALM and kick but!
